I would highly recommend a beautiful, intelligent book called Venice Revealed, by Paolo Barbaro. It is a beautifully written, reflective read about living in the city from birth to old age.
Easier to find (including a version for iPad) is Thomas Madden's Venice, a New History. Madden is an American academic whose historical narrative is exciting, quickly-paced and colourful.
Finally, Tiziano Scarpa's Venice is a Fish is a richly sensual history of the city, its sights, sounds and smells.
